Finland has a history of housing both world class and sub par bands, thankfully Oceanwake nicely ranks near the top of the prior. This debut is obscenely powerful and without question rivals the bands that inspired its creation.
Sounding like a fresh blend of Swallow the Sun (borrowing a few riffs from the bands first album in fact) and Aphotic and presented in a post metal finish this band really lacks for nothing. Energetic and constantly flowing, the sound presented is both ponderous and enigmatic, heavy and unpredictable; this band delivers with each song.
The guitars have a thick and somewhat dry tone easily the most modern (i.e. "post") part of their sound. The music is very original and while some of the ground they walk upon is familiar they mostly stay off the beaten path opting to run along side it and occasionally venture on it. The bass and drums also have the same vibrant attitude and feeling.
The singer is probably the biggest let down here as his voice is fairly corish (though he does try admirably too to fit the metal mold.) His highs are the same as Mikko Kotamäki (Swallow the Sun) as are his more gutturally lows, however his mid/low main vocal attack is where his punky aesthetics shine through.
The band never bludgeons the listener but they are incredibly heavy; and while never truly atavistic they do add their own signature.
Dark and light constantly play off each other on this album. Be it through clean or distorted riffs the music is deeply beautiful and uneasy with a side of anxiety which is an oddly soothing mixture. This is a band to watch closely as they should go far. This is recommended for fans of the aforementioned and doom in general. 9/10!!
