Mantar - Death By Burning ...

When I came across Germany's Mantar reading that they’re a two piece had me thinking I was in for tunes in the vain of Early Man. Then I read they had been a band barely a year. I wasn’t prepared for the assault and damage my ears were about to take. What struck me first was how friggen heavy this album sounds. Maybe it’s how wet the snare is. I’m not sure but it fuckin kills! I noticed a streak of Motorhead in these tunes.

Maybe sprinkled with a bit of Melvins and some black metal. The sound isn’t overly fuzzy. Just a smooth rockin ride much of the time. The drums smack especially hard. The snare feeling as if your face is pressed against it as it’s being hit.Awesome! . The album opens with “Spit” a hard charging ’69 GTO out of friggen control! Damn! I thought.

This is waaaaay better than I expected. Then “Cult Witness” kicks on and grabs you by the collar and takes you on another nasty, venom coated ride. All it made me want to do was hit the hiway and open up the motor. The end vocals adding that extra  spit(haha) of venom “And I’m only two songs in!” I thought.

“Astral Cannibal” came on and boom, you’re taken on another yet more controlled ride it seemed. The guitars really starting to cut with almost a story telling vibe. A two piece! I kept saying to myself out-loud. A definite stand out album that demands to be played front to back then repeated. A highlight is the rocking “Cult Witness”and the wicked stomp of “The Huntsman”.  During “White Nights” and “March of the Crows” these tunes cut deep into the listener and drench you in walls of devastating guitars and crushing drums I could pretty much list the entire album as killer. The vox are sparsely spit out with such a venom Tom G. Warrior would be proud.

This black ‘n ‘roll two piece have arguably made one of the best records of 2014. Such venom laced throughout these tunes. Hanno Klanhardt on guitars, Erine Sakarya on stomp of drums. This two piece will be turning heads with this album. They sure as hell turned mine! You can get the self produced album out on Svart Records now. Play it loud mutha!!
